Norris Claims Stunning Maiden Pole at Madring, Edging Antonelli

Lando Norris produced a spectacular final-lap performance to take the inaugural pole position at Formula 1’s new Madring circuit, narrowly defeating championship leader Kimi Antonelli during a thrilling Spanish Grand Prix qualifying session.

The McLaren driver had not seemed to be in the mix for pole throughout most of the session, but unleashed a significant surge in pace on his decisive run to beat Antonelli by a razor-thin margin of 11 thousandths of a second.

Max Verstappen, who had earlier moved into pole contention, finished third after outdueling Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton delivered a strong recovery drive to take fourth place, despite crashing during final practice earlier on Saturday. Verstappen edged out Hamilton by 49 thousandths of a second.

Norris’s astonishing lap was further emphasized by the gap to his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, who sat in seventh place, nearly half a second behind the new pole sitter.

“I’m shocked! A little bit surprised to be here now. My god, that was probably one of the best laps I’ve done in my career,” Norris said. “Very, very happy. Very proud, very happy for the team. Just one of those laps where everything came together. I had a good idea of what I wanted to do. It was whether my brain let me do it on the last lap. Everything pretty much worked perfectly.”

Charles Leclerc will start fifth for Ferrari, while George Russell, Antonelli’s Mercedes teammate and the current closest challenger in the standings, could only manage sixth.

The qualifying results saw several drivers eliminated early, with Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto failing to advance past Q2. Carlos Sainz, Fernando Alonso, Sergio Perez, and Valtteri Bottas were all knocked out in the opening segment of qualifying.
