A dedicated officer has been assigned to address the issue of homes and buildings incorrectly connecting wastewater systems to the wrong drainage networks, a problem that significantly impacts local waterways.
According to a spokesperson for Thames Water, such misconnections can have severe environmental consequences. The utility provider acknowledged that while it does not manage third-party drainage infrastructure, it collaborates closely with partners to resolve these incidents within its catchment area.
So far, seven cases have been identified in North and West London. Three have been successfully resolved, while remediation efforts continue on the remaining four. The spokesperson noted that most misconnections occur accidentally, but property owners retain responsibility for ensuring new connections are plumbed correctly, urging freeholders and developers to exercise caution.
Barnet Council also weighed in, stating that investigations into these matters can be complex and involve multiple stakeholders. However, they reaffirmed their commitment to resolving the issues as swiftly and effectively as possible.
Finally, someone is taking this seriously. Seven cases is a start, but I hope they catch them all before more rivers are polluted.
Most occur accidentally? Really? Seems like lazy plumbing disguised as an accident. Property owners need to be held strictly liable.
