Consumers who recently opened a tin of mackerel and suspected the contents were not quite right may have a valid concern. An ongoing overfishing crisis has led to dwindling stocks of traditional mackerel, prompting some manufacturers to substitute the product with jack mackerel, a different species with a similar name. This shift has raised alarms that shoppers are being misled about what they are purchasing.
Over the past year, prominent brands including Princes, along with several supermarket own-label products, have swapped traditional mackerel fillets for jack mackerel fillets. The consumer advocacy group Which? has strongly criticized this substitution, arguing that customers deserve to know exactly what they are buying and that the change may amount to short-changing buyers.
