Chilean Humboldt Penguins Wear Antimicrobial Vests for Wound Recovery

In a novel approach to wildlife rehabilitation in Chile, rescued Humboldt penguins are now being treated with specially designed recovery vests. These garments address a critical aspect of community care for the species: protecting injured birds from further harm as they heal.

According to footage from a rescue center, handlers carefully measure and adjust the short-term vests on penguins as they walk near pools or rest. The primary function of the vests is to prevent the birds from pecking at open wounds or pulling out surgical stitches, which is a common complication during recovery.

Beyond physical protection, the fabric of the vests is infused with copper and zinc. These metals possess antimicrobial properties that help limit the growth of bacteria and fungi, thereby supporting the healing process. The project is currently experimental, with designs adapted to fit the unique size and shape of each bird. Early trials indicate that the penguins tolerate the vests well and that the garments effectively shield wounds during rehabilitation.
