Arizona, a central pillar in the bipartisan effort to revitalize U.S. semiconductor production, is confronting a significant reduction in its water supply from the Colorado River. The state is expected to lose more than 25% of its annual water allocation from the 1,400-mile river system, which serves as a critical resource for the region and neighboring western states.
A recent federal decision regarding the management of the river’s declining flow disproportionately impacts Arizona, a region already grappling with chronic drought conditions. The Colorado River currently supplies over a third of the state’s total water needs.
Arizona has long been a key location for semiconductor manufacturing. Major industry players, including TSMC and Intel, are currently undertaking massive factory expansions in the area. However, the reduced water availability poses a growing challenge to these operations and the broader goal of strengthening domestic chip production.
The situation is visually stark at Lake Mead, where water intake towers at the Hoover Dam stand adjacent to a prominent “bathtub ring” on the reservoir banks, indicating historic low water levels caused by unprecedented drought.
We already have droughts. Adding major industry without solving the river crisis seems like setting everyone up for failure.
Great news for Arizona land values near the new fabs, I guess. Water will become the most valuable commodity in the desert very soon.
