The organizing committee for the 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) has announced the schedule for its educational and discussion segments, highlighting the Master Class, Cine Class, and Special Talk programs.
The flagship Master Class will feature four directors exploring their artistic methodologies. South Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin, who garnered international acclaim this year for his film “Hope,” will examine the origins of his creative perspective. He will be joined by Filipino director Lav Diaz and French filmmaker Bertrand Mandico, recognized for his unique aesthetic. Additionally, Japanese animation legend Rintaro, known for directing “Galaxy Express 999” and “Metropolis,” is set to return to Korea for the first time in 17 years.
Launched last year, the Cine Class program assembles six industry figures from diverse backgrounds. Zhang Lu, who secured the Busan Award for Best Film at the 2025 festival for “Gloaming in Luomu,” will inaugurate the series with insights on cinema and life. The lineup also includes documentary filmmaker Seifollah Samadian, who will discuss his 30-year friendship with the late Abbas Kiarostami; actress Judith Godrèche, noted for her advocacy regarding abuse in the French film industry; and producer Billy Acumen, known for the “Roundup” franchise and “The King’s Warden.” Director Bi Gan and actor Shim Eun-kyung will also participate.
The Special Talk segment comprises three conversations. Producer Kim Tae-ho, who has shifted focus to film acquisition and distribution, will appear alongside a screening of “Mother Mary.” This year’s Camellia Award recipient, Ann Hui, will reflect on her cinematic career. Finally, film critic Jung Sung-il will moderate a discussion linked to the Ahn Sung-ki tribute program, following a screening of “Festival.()
The 31st Busan International Film Festival is scheduled to take place from October 6 to 15 at the Busan Cinema Center and various locations across the city. The accompanying 21st Asian Contents & Film Market will run from October 10 to 13.
