Practical Magic 2 stars link sequel’s appeal to desire for simpler times

Actresses Joey King and Maisie Williams have suggested that the demand for a sequel to the 1998 fantasy rom-com Practical Magic stems from a cultural longing for less complicated times.

The original film, which found a second life as a cult classic on social media platforms, inspired Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman to return nearly three decades later. King, who plays Sally’s daughter Kylie, and Williams, who portrays Gillian’s daughter Antonia, joined the cast for the new installment.

King told BBC Newsbeat that the push for nostalgic content is driven by the rapid pace of modern life. “I think with technology moving at the speed that it is, we’re really missing the times when we were less reachable,” she said, noting that people miss an era where one could “stare out the window” for answers.

Williams agreed, describing the trend as a symptom of people seeking simpler periods. However, she expressed appreciation that the project was a sequel rather than a remake. “I do believe in pushing the story forwards… I am not the biggest fan of the remake because I think it’s a shame to withhold ourselves from telling a new story,” Williams said.

Bullock previously noted the rarity of such enthusiastic audience demand, stating, “You never get the opportunity to do something where people really are asking you, ‘please do it.'”

The film explores the Owens family curse while featuring returning stars Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, alongside newcomers Lee Pace, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod. Early reviews have been mixed; The Guardian called it a “nostalgia-bait return,” while The Hollywood Reporter admitted the film works best when viewers ignore logic and enjoy the chemistry between the actresses.

Williams also highlighted the relevance of the film’s themes regarding female solidarity. Acknowledging current pressures on women’s rights globally, she stated, “It’s so important in a time like this for women to be supporting one another.” She added that the series’ focus on symbiosis and power could serve as an empowering message for audiences today.
