The surge poses significant challenges for the transportation sector, where diesel is essential for trucking and rail operations, as well as for construction and agricultural industries. Economists warn that businesses, which have so far absorbed higher energy costs through existing contracts and margins, may soon be forced to pass these expenses on to shoppers.
Geopolitical Tensions and Refining Bottlenecks
Patrick De Haan, a petroleum expert at GasBuddy, attributed the rising prices to the ongoing conflict in Iran, which has disrupted global oil supplies. The escalation of hostilities between the U.S. and Iran pushed Brent crude prices to $108 a barrel. Additionally, Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian energy infrastructure have severely reduced Russia’s refining capacity, leading to a domestic fuel shortage and limiting exports.
