Google announced a new system on Thursday designed to simplify the process of switching password managers on Android. The update allows users to migrate their credentials between applications without having to manage CSV files, addressing both convenience and security concerns.
To utilize the feature, users launch their new password manager app and select the option to import data from their existing tool. Android automatically detects the installed manager applications and coordinates the transfer directly between them. Users can review the data being moved and confirm the action with minimal taps.
A significant advantage of this method is its support for passkey transfers. This ensures that users do not need to re-establish passkeys when adopting a new service, while also mitigating the security risks associated with exposing sensitive data through unencrypted CSV exports.
The functionality is already live in Google’s own password manager and is available through select partners. Current support includes major services such as 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane, with additional applications expected to join the ecosystem in the future.
The update is compatible with all devices running Android 8 or higher.
