According to the European climate service Copernicus, August 2026 was the hottest month ever recorded globally, surpassing previous records due to the combined effects of human-induced climate change and a powerful El Niño event. The month saw an average global temperature of 62.53 degrees Fahrenheit (16.96 degrees Celsius). This figure technically exceeds the prior record set in July 2023 by one-hundredth of a degree Celsius, though experts note that the margin falls within the margin of uncertainty, effectively making them tied in historical data. Samantha Burgess, Copernicus’s strategic climate lead, stated that the planet is now operating well outside the climatic ranges anticipated just a decade ago.
August’s temperatures were 1.65 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, significantly exceeding the 1.5-degree threshold established by the 2015 Paris climate agreement as a critical boundary to avoid the most severe impacts of climate change. Data from Copernicus indicates that the eight warmest months on record have all occurred since July 2023.
The extreme heat also contributed to the hottest summer on record for the Northern Hemisphere. In the United States, the contiguous states experienced their warmest summer since measurements began, overtaking the peak heat of the Dust Bowl era in 1936. The June-through-August period averaged 74.37 degrees Fahrenheit (23.54 degrees Celsius), nearly four-tenths of a degree warmer than the 1936 record. Globally, this past summer tied with 2024 as the hottest year-on-record.
Ocean temperatures also hit historic highs. Global monthly sea surface temperatures in August matched the record set in March 2024, and August 22 marked the warmest single day ever recorded for the world’s oceans.
Climate scientists emphasize that these events are not anomalies but expected outcomes of long-term warming trends. Andrew Dessler, a climate scientist at Texas A&M University, noted in an email that the planet is warming exactly as forecasted decades ago.
