TSMC Reports Record August Revenue Surge Driven by AI Chip Demand

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) posted a record monthly revenue for August on Thursday, underscoring the sustained momentum in the semiconductor sector fueled by artificial intelligence applications.

The world’s largest contract chipmaker reported earnings of 514.8 billion New Taiwan dollars, equivalent to approximately $16.35 billion. This figure represents a 53.3% increase compared to the same period last year and a 10.1% rise from July, extending a streak of four consecutive months of monthly revenue growth.

During a July earnings call, TSMC described AI-related demand as “extremely robust.” The company also reported a year-on-year profit jump exceeding 77% in the second quarter and forecast third-quarter revenue to land between $44.6 billion and $45.8 billion.

Market data released Wednesday by TrendForce indicates TSMC maintained its dominance in the global foundry space, securing a 72.5% market share in the second quarter. The research firm noted that capacity for advanced 5-, 4-, and 3-nanometer nodes remained fully booked due to intense demand for AI server processors.

In comparison, Samsung Foundry held the second position with a 5.9% market share, followed by China’s SMIC at 5.4%. The combined revenue of the top 10 foundries reached a record nearly $53.49 billion in the second quarter, driven in part by supply constraints in advanced processes used for AI and high-performance computing chips.

On Thursday, TSMC shares closed down 0.61% ahead of the revenue announcement.

In a separate development, TSMC and Dutch semiconductor equipment manufacturer ASML announced an initiative this week to accelerate the industry’s shift toward next-generation chipmaking technology. TSMC stated it plans to utilize ASML’s High NA EUV technology for large-scale manufacturing of advanced nodes starting in 2030, a move expected to support the increasingly complex transistor architectures required by AI applications.

  1. Wait, they are using High NA EUV for mass production in 2030? That feels incredibly early. I wonder if the roadmap is too aggressive or just confidently visionary.

  2. That market share gap is staggering. Samsung and SMIC合计 less than 12% while TSMC holds over 72%. Truly a monopoly in advanced nodes.
