Samsung Targets iPhone Users as Apple Enters the Foldable Phone Market

Samsung Electronics is intensifying efforts to lure iPhone owners into its foldable ecosystem, a strategic push coinciding with Apple’s anticipated debut in the segment. According to a company spokesperson, the proportion of iOS users switching to the newly launched Galaxy Z Fold8 series is 1.6 times higher than the rate observed for the preceding generation, which included the Fold7 and Flip7 models.

Apple revealed its first foldable iPhone during a launch event on Wednesday, marking one of the inaugural major product introductions under new Chief Executive John Ternus. Samsung, which pioneered the category with its original Galaxy Fold in 2019, aims to capitalize on renewed consumer interest in bendable devices as the competitive landscape shifts.

In the United States, Samsung reported that 30% of Galaxy Z Flip8 purchasers had previously used competing smartphone brands, with many buying their first foldable device. The company noted that Fold8 buyers were attracted to the phone’s lightweight design and inner screen for multitasking, while those opting for the Fold8 Ultra prioritized the expansive display and additional workspace, reducing the need for a separate tablet.

To further ease the transition for Apple customers, Samsung has updated its Smart Switch feature. The upgraded tool allows iPhone users to transfer data to a Galaxy device wirelessly by scanning a QR code, eliminating the requirement to install the Smart Switch app on their current iOS device.

Market analysis from Counterpoint Research indicates that Samsung is expected to maintain its dominance in the global foldable market this year with a 32% share. However, competition is heating up; Apple is projected to secure 25% of the market as it enters the fray, while Huawei remains a formidable competitor in China.

  1. 30% of Flip8 buyers were switching from other brands? That’s impressive. Maybe the compact size is the winning feature.

  2. Samsung making it easier to switch from iOS is smart. That QR code transfer sounds like a game changer for hesitant users.
