Apple has entered the foldable smartphone market with its inaugural device, the iPhone Duo, positioning it as a direct competitor to Samsung’s latest offering, the Galaxy Z Fold 8. With Samsung already well-established in the sector—having released eight generations of foldables—the arrival of a bendable screen from Cupertino marks a significant shift. Both devices share a similar short-and-squat “passport-style” form factor, distinguishing them from the taller, candy-bar profiles of earlier iterations like the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
Samsung’s momentum appears strong, with company reports indicating that the Z Fold 8 and its Ultra counterpart have outsold their predecessors by 30 percent during their first month on the market. However, the iPhone Duo arrives with an impressive specification sheet designed to challenge that dominance. While final performance conclusions await hands-on review, a side-by-side analysis of the two devices reveals a tight contest across key categories.
The displays of both phones are remarkably similar in size, featuring 7.6-inch inner panels that unfold to reveal high-resolution screens running at 120Hz. The iPhone Duo boasts a slightly higher resolution of 1,878 by 2,670 pixels compared to the Fold 8’s 2,448 by 1,848. Samsung manufactured the folding OLED panels for Apple, and notably, the anti-reflective coating praised in previous Samsung reviews is present on the iPhone Duo, though Apple refers to it as a “nano-texture finish.” Both devices also utilize a titanium plate beneath the folding layers to enhance durability.
In terms of raw performance, Apple currently holds the advantage. The iPhone Duo is powered by the new A20 Pro chip, built on a 2nm process that reportedly delivers 50 percent more memory bandwidth and a 40 percent faster GPU than Apple’s previous A19 Pro silicon. This gives it a lead over the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor found in the Galaxy Z Fold 8. While Samsung offers up to 16GB of RAM in its highest-tier model, Apple has not disclosed its RAM figures, relying instead on the efficiency of iOS 27.
Camera capabilities differ between the two, though neither provides the telephoto lens found in their respective flagship slab-style phones. The Fold 8 features two 50-megapixel sensors for wide and ultrawide shots, whereas the iPhone Duo opts for dual 48-megapixel cameras. For selfies, Samsung provides two 10-megapixel front-facing cameras, while the iPhone Duo includes a 12-megapixel cover camera and an under-display sensor primarily suited for FaceTime calls.
Battery life and charging present another point of contrast. The Fold 8 houses a 4,800 mAh battery supporting 45W wired charging and 20W wireless charging. Apple has not listed a specific battery capacity but claims the iPhone Duo can last up to 44 hours on the outer display and 31 hours on the inner one, with MagSafe charging capped at 25W. Both devices rely on side-mounted fingerprint sensors due to the physical constraints of their folding designs, replacing FaceID and ultrasonic under-display readers respectively.
Multitasking remains a strength for Samsung, which allows three apps to run side-by-side with advanced windowing and bubble features in its One UI software. Apple’s iOS 27 introduces more flexible multitasking, including resizable side-by-side apps and saved app pairs, but still trails Samsung in overall versatility. Durability also favors Apple, as the iPhone Duo carries an IP68 rating compared to the Fold 8’s IP48, making it more resistant to dust and water.
Price remains a significant factor, with the iPhone Duo starting at $1,999 for 256GB and climbing to $3,199 for the 2TB model. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is slightly more affordable, beginning at $1,900 for 256GB and reaching $2,500 for the 1TB version. Ultimately, while the iPhone Duo offers compelling performance and durability improvements, the decision may hinge on whether users prioritize Samsung’s mature multitasking ecosystem or Apple’s integration with the iOS platform.
