Apple Watch Gains AI-Driven Audio Recap and Ambient Listening Tools

During a product announcement on Wednesday, Apple unveiled a new audio intelligence capability for the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4. The feature, named Siri Recap, leverages the device’s microphone to capture ambient conversation and automatically generate structured notes through Apple Intelligence.

Once a dialogue concludes, the system produces a title, a high-level summary, and a list of key discussion points. These outputs are stored within the Siri app, where users can review them at their convenience. The company noted that users have full control over the feature’s operation, with options to enable it permanently, schedule specific active periods, or disable it entirely.

The introduction of Siri Recap positions Apple in direct competition with existing note-taking applications such as Granola and Circleback, which already offer similar functionality via Apple Watch apps. Additionally, the event highlighted other audio-centric upgrades, including an instant Shazam integration that mirrors Google’s Now Playing service. The Watch can also detect environmental sounds like sirens, alarms, doorbells, and crying infants, alerting the wearer when necessary.

A companion function called Live Rewind allows users to double-press the digital crown to receive an encrypted recap of the previous 15 seconds of audio. Apple emphasized that the system does not save raw audio recordings or identify individual speakers. However, privacy advocates may still raise concerns, as the summaries generated from always-listening devices could inadvertently capture sensitive personal information.
