Rural charity warns of heating oil theft surge amid rising costs

Kate Clifford, director of the Rural Community Network (RCN), has issued a stark warning about the increasing prevalence of home heating oil theft after her organisation became a victim of the crime. Clifford discovered the theft in 2024 when she arrived at the charity’s Cookstown offices to find the heating non-functional, only to realise that more than 1,000 litres of recently purchased oil had been siphoned from an external tank.

  1. Has anyone found a real solution for securing these external tanks? My neighbor had a similar issue last winter and nothing seemed to stop it.
