Jon Stewart returned to his desk at “The Daily Show” on Tuesday evening to lampoon President Donald Trump and his close aide, Natalie Harp, by remixing the promotional footage for Nathan Fielder’s new documentary, “You Can See Everything.”
During his opening monologue, Stewart criticized the president for residing in what he described as a “reality distortion field,” noting that Trump frequently dismisses expert opinions and journalistic facts in favor of his own perspectives. Stewart humorously reflected on the appeal of such ignorance, asking, “Maybe it’s just better to be the guy in ‘The Matrix,’ going, ‘Oh, this blue pill’s not so bad! That reality has steak!’ But I know too much. How do I get there? Who would give me the blue pill?”
Stewart then transitioned to clips highlighting Harp, who has been dubbed “the human printer” for her habit of carrying a laptop and portable printer to provide the president with a constant flow of favorable news coverage. One segment cited reports that Harp once climbed into the trunk of an SUV to ensure she could accompany Trump to a court appearance. Another clip referenced TMZ footage suggesting she had written affectionate letters to the president.
“Can we even trust her?” Stewart quipped before announcing an exclusive preview. He claimed the show had spent a month embedded with Harp and the president to analyze their dynamic, then played the viral trailer for Fielder’s documentary with Trump’s face superimposed over Fielder’s.
The modified preview featured the line, “Why would I deceive you? There’s no — there’s no reason for me to do that,” a quote originally spoken by Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. The documentary, which recently had a secret screening at the Telluride Film Festival, follows Fielder and his crew as they film Holmes in the weeks before she reports to prison. Holmes was sentenced to over 11 years in 2022 for defrauding investors through her former health-tech company, Theranos.
I loved the Matrix reference about the blue pill. Stewart really knows how to articulate this collective exhaustion.
