Do You Still Need to Restart Your PC Regularly in 2026?

While the advice to reboot your computer daily has been a staple of IT culture for years, the necessity of this habit has evolved with modern hardware and software. As of 2026, the general consensus remains that periodic restarts are beneficial, particularly for Windows users, though the frequency depends on your operating system and device type.

Windows machines generally require more frequent reboots than Linux systems. For desktops, restarting at least once a week is advisable to maintain optimal performance. Laptop users, however, should prioritize shutting down or putting their devices to sleep when finished. Keeping a sleeping laptop enclosed in a bag poses a thermal risk, as the device may inadvertently wake up in a confined space and overheat.

The primary justification for a reboot is resetting the system’s memory state. Over time, background processes, application caches, and drivers can accumulate errors and “cruft,” leading to performance degradation. A full restart clears this data, providing a clean slate. Additionally, rebooting can enhance security by flushing out temporary malware that resides only in system memory, though it should not be considered a standalone defense against cyber threats.

Windows users should be aware of the “Fast Startup” feature, which is enabled by default. This function saves the kernel state to a hibernation file during shutdown rather than performing a complete power-off. While this speeds up boot times, it prevents the system from fully clearing memory leaks and cached errors. To ensure a true reboot, users can hold the Shift key while selecting Shut down, or consistently use the Restart option. Those who wish to disable Fast Startup entirely can do so via the Control Panel under Power Options.

Another critical scenario for rebooting is after installing updates. Whether updating individual applications, drivers, or the operating system itself, a restart is often necessary to finalize installations and remove obsolete data. Since OS patches frequently address security vulnerabilities, delaying a reboot leaves systems exposed to potential attacks. Users are advised to research recent Windows updates for any reported bugs before proceeding.

In contrast, Windows on ARM devices, which utilize processors similar to those found in smartphones and tablets, are engineered for long uptimes. While these systems still benefit from occasional reboots—especially following updates—they do not require the same rigorous reboot schedule as traditional x86 PCs. For most users, a weekly restart remains a practical and effective maintenance routine.
