Bruce Davis, Former Academy Executive Director, Dies at 83

Bruce Davis, the longtime executive director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, passed away on September 5 in Los Angeles at the age of 83. During his career, he played a pivotal role in establishing the Margaret Herrick Library and the Academy Film Archive.

Before joining the Academy, Davis chaired the theater department at Juniata College in Pennsylvania, where he also founded the film department. He furthered his studies in filmmaking at Columbia University. A native of Washington, D.C., he developed a passion for cinema at an early age.

Davis began his tenure at the Academy managing public programming before being appointed executive director in 1989. He retired from the organization in 2011 after 22 years of service.

His time at the helm was marked by significant advancements in film preservation. Collaborating with Academy president Robert Wise and the city of Beverly Hills, Davis secured the rights to a 1928 building, which subsequently became the Margaret Herrick Library. He also oversaw the purchase of a 1948 television studio in Hollywood, a property that was transformed into the Academy Film Archive.

Following his retirement, Davis authored “The Academy and the Award,” a detailed exploration of the origins and history of the Oscars. Within the organization, he was remembered for his sharp wit, literary talent, and a cherished Friday lunch tradition that brought together staff from various departments for conversation and meals.

He is survived by his wife, Joann, and their four daughters: Brangien Davis, Alexandra Davis, Archer Davis, and Roxanne Davis.
