Chrome Accelerates Update Cycle to Every Two Weeks Amid Rising AI Security Threats

Google has officially transitioned Chrome’s release schedule from a four-week to a two-week cycle, marking the debut of Chrome 153 on Tuesday across desktop, iOS, and Android platforms. This move fulfills a commitment announced earlier this year as the tech giant adapts to a rapidly shifting digital security landscape.

In a statement regarding the company’s evolving security strategy, Google highlighted that the proliferation of automated AI tools and community-sourced bug reports has significantly increased the volume of required patches. According to the company, shortening the interval between releases allows for more efficient management of these security fixes.

The adjustment is particularly critical given the rise in speed and sophistication of cyber threats, some of which are now attributed to AI capabilities. By reducing the time between landing a fix in the public codebase and distributing it to end users, Google aims to minimize the “N-day” patch gap—the period during which a known vulnerability remains unpatched.

Beyond security, the faster cadence is designed to accelerate feature deployment. The AI era has lowered barriers to entry, enabling a surge of new browser competitors utilizing AI-assisted development. Although OpenAI recently shut down its web browser, ChatGPT Atlas, alternative options such as Brave, Opera Neon, Perplexity’s Comet, DuckDuckGo’s browser, and Dia continue to vie for market share.

Google is also leveraging the shorter cycle to rapidly iterate on new AI features being integrated into Chrome. As the world’s most widely used browser, Chrome’s policy shifts often set industry standards. Mozilla, Microsoft, and Brave have already adopted similar two-week schedules in response to Chrome’s leadership.

This is not the first time Google has modified its release cadence. In 2021, the company reduced its cycle from six weeks to four, returning to the “release early, release often” philosophy it had championed over a decade prior.
