During proceedings at the Old Bailey, prosecutors revealed that the driver operating a luxury vehicle owned by heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua attempted to overtake another car moments before the collision that resulted in two deaths.
The court was informed that police have not yet obtained a formal statement from Joshua regarding the incident. Under cross-examination by Kayode’s legal representative, officer Ajayi acknowledged that he had not contacted the boxer because he lacked his phone number. When pressed on the matter, Ajayi stated that efforts to secure a statement from Joshua are currently ongoing.
The trial has been adjourned until 10 September. Joshua, who was born in Watford and has family roots in Sagamu in Ogun state near the crash site, took to social media following the collision to pay tribute to the victims, Ghami and Ayodele.
In his message, Joshua expressed shock at the magnitude of the loss, writing, “I didn’t even realise how special they are. I’ll just be walking with them and cracking jokes with them, not even knowing God kept me in the presence of great men.” He further reflected on the hardship faced by the families, adding, “It’s tough for me, but I know it’s even tougher for their parents.”
