Brazilian authorities have removed the Devil’s Throat walkway at the Iguazu Falls, one of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders, to protect it from being swept away by dangerously high waters.
The decision came after heavy rainfall associated with the El Nino weather phenomenon drove water levels at the falls to nearly eight times their historical average. Due to these hazardous conditions, officials were forced to temporarily close the iconic wooden structure to the public on Sunday.
Officials cited the risk of the surging waters carrying away the walkway as the primary reason for its dismantling.
Mother Nature flexing her muscles again. It’s a scary reminder of how fragile our infrastructure really is.
Seems like a lot of money spent on structures in such dangerous zones. Should we be building there at all?
Is the Argentine side still open? The view looks even more dramatic from this angle now.
El Nino is showing us its true power. Eight times the average flow is genuinely terrifying. Stay safe, everyone.
I visited in 2019; that walkway was breathtaking. Hope they rebuild it safely when the waters recede.
