Former Gang Leader Duane Davis Sentenced to 40 Years in Tupac Shakur Murder Case

Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a former California gang leader convicted of masterminding the fatal shooting of rapper Tupac Shakur in 1996, was handed a 40-year prison sentence on Tuesday. The sentencing underscores significant long-standing issues within the US justice system regarding the investigation of the high-profile case.

Delivering the sentence, Judge Carli Kierny addressed Davis directly, noting the rapper’s consistent demeanor over the past three years. “For three years, I’ve heard you say some variation of the same thing … ‘Yeah, I was involved in this. But I’m different. I’ve moved on. I got out of Compton. I’m a grandfather now,'” the judge recounted.

Emphasizing the gravity of the crime, Judge Kierny added, “You don’t get to take a man from his family … and just walk away from it.” The trial brought to light years of alleged police mismanagement and failures in solving the murder, which has remained a focal point of public interest since it occurred three decades ago.

  1. The judge’s comment about him walking away really hits hard. He took a life and lived freely for thirty years.

  2. Do people really think he is a changed grandfather? Orchestrating a hit isn’t something you just ‘move on’ from.

  3. I still can’t believe it took thirty years to get a conviction. Justice delayed is still justice denied for Tupac’s family.

  4. Forty years feels light for murder, but I guess decades of police failures played a role in dragging this out.
