Iran has executed a “major shift” in its operational strategy against the United Kingdom, increasingly targeting “harder” objectives such as military installations, according to Sir Ken McCallum, the director general of MI5. Delivering the agency’s annual threat update at London headquarters on Tuesday, McCallum highlighted the escalating dangers posed by hostile foreign actors, terrorism, and the misuse of artificial intelligence.
McCallum noted that Iran has demonstrated a clear preference for subcontracting its violent activities within the UK, utilizing criminal proxies to intimidate Iranian opposition figures, media organizations, and Israeli interests. He expressed particular concern over the aggression directed at British Jewish communities, stating, “Sadly, much of this aggression has been aimed at British Jewish communities, with whom I want to express solidarity.”
The intelligence chief revealed that alleged Iranian-linked activities resulted in more than 50 arrests in the UK over the past year. His remarks followed a series of arson and sabotage incidents targeting Jewish sites across the UK and Europe, which he condemned as “sickening acts.” While declining to disclose specifics regarding military plots due to ongoing investigations, McCallum alluded to the thwarted attempt on RAF Fairford in late September. The incident prompted the US to relocate its long-range bombers from the base, and UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated the attack was “almost certainly” directed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
McCallum emphasized that attributing all hostile acts directly to Tehran remains complex, noting that individuals may work for foreign states “knowingly or unknowingly.” This pattern mirrors tactics employed by Russia, which has also been accused of using unaware individuals to conduct sabotage across Western Europe. Groups such as Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia have claimed responsibility for recent attacks on synagogues in the Netherlands and Belgium, as well as incidents in north London.
Turning to broader security challenges, McCallum reported that the volume of state-threat cases managed by MI5 has quadrupled over the last decade. He declared that Russia remains “aggressor number one,” pointing to an escalation in “hybrid warfare” tactics including cyberattacks and sabotage. McCallum suggested these aggressive moves are linked to Moscow’s limited and costly military progress in Ukraine, as it seeks to unsettle European allies below the threshold of conventional armed conflict.
The address also addressed the rapid evolution of AI, which McCallum described as “supercharging the cybersecurity contest.” He warned that AI could facilitate targeted radicalization and propaganda, while raising alarms about the potential for malicious actors to enhance existing biological weapons or develop new ones.

I wonder how many more UK bases might see similar sabotage attempts. The RAF Fairford incident feels like a clear warning sign.
Is it just me, or does ‘subcontracting violence’ sound like a corporate buzzword for terrorism? Very disturbing shift in tactics.
The rise in AI-driven threats is genuinely alarming. We need stronger regulations now before bad actors exploit these tools further.
