Sanders Calls for Ban on Artificial Superintelligence Following OpenAI CEO’s Warnings

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, an Independent from Vermont, issued a call on Monday for the permanent prohibition of artificial superintelligence. The demand comes in direct response to recent statements made by OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman regarding the dangers posed by advanced AI systems.

Altman, in an interview with Politico’s “Decoded” podcast last week, cautioned that society is on the verge of encountering a “coming tidal wave of cybersecurity problems” stemming from open-source artificial intelligence models. These remarks regarding the potential risks of accessible AI prompted Sanders to take legislative action.

Sanders argued that the development of artificial superintelligence represents an existential threat that requires immediate and permanent regulatory bans to protect public safety.

  1. Is a permanent ban actually enforceable? Open-source models are already everywhere. I worry this legislative approach is just reacting too late to the reality.

  2. Finally, someone in power listens to the tech insiders about these risks. We can’t afford to ignore this existential threat any longer.
