Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle has issued an apology to the travelling support following a 4-1 defeat to Coventry City. The loss marks the second consecutive away game where Newcastle have conceded four goals, echoing a similar 4-1 result against Leeds United on Monday Night Football a month prior.
The setback ends a five-game unbeaten run for the Magpies across all competitions and sees them drop to 11th in the Premier League table. Despite dominating possession with 19 shots, three big chances, and more than double the touches in the opposition box compared to Coventry, Newcastle failed to convert their opportunities.
Talking to Sky Sports, Jaissle expressed frustration at the outcome. “We’re frustrated. It’s a feeling you don’t want to have on a Monday evening after a match where you should win,” he said. “We can only apologise to the fans who came here; they deserve a different result.”
The German coach acknowledged that while there were positive aspects to the performance, his side lacked the “desire and hunger” to finish attacks. He emphasised the need for improvement in both boxes, particularly in defense, noting that conceding eight goals in two away matches is “not good enough for the Premier League.”
Jamie Carragher is right about the physicality though. Coventry bullied us in midfield. Jaissle needs to address that immediately.
I was amazed they created three big chances and still lost 4-1. What went wrong in front of goal? That’s the real puzzle here.
Apologies don’t fix leaks. Conceding eight in two away games is unacceptable for a top-half side. We need answers, not words.
