Ambi Secures $26 Million to Develop Always-On AI Assistant

Former Plaud executive Peter Mo has launched Ambi, a new artificial intelligence application designed to listen to users throughout the day to provide real-time context and intelligent assistance. The company announced on Monday that it has raised $26 million in funding led by Luminous Ventures, with additional investment from original design manufacturer Huaqin. Luminous Ventures is known for backing prominent Chinese tech firms such as Meituan and Unitree Robotics.

Ambi is releasing compatible applications for iPhones, Macs, and Apple Watches. While these tools function similarly to meeting note-takers, their primary purpose is to capture ambient context continuously. Unlike traditional note-taking services that analyze conversations after they conclude, Ambi aims to intervene during meetings by proactively offering suggestions or retrieving relevant knowledge from a user’s calendar, knowledge base, and web data.

Moo emphasized that current AI interactions are often confined to screens, requiring delays for recording transfers and cloud processing. “The way we interact with intelligence is limited. Often the intelligence is trapped on the screen,” Mo told TechCrunch. “That’s why we are building Ambi to use AI anytime and anywhere.”

The startup plans to expand its capabilities with a desktop application that will monitor user activity and store significant data points in memory for more personalized recommendations. This approach mirrors services like Littlebird and Minimi. Additionally, Ambi is developing its own hardware device featuring a screen, speaker, camera, and microphones to further enhance context capture and information display.

The launch occurs against a backdrop of heightened scrutiny regarding AI devices that lack clear indicators when they are recording. Concerns have been amplified by recent lawsuits against meeting note-takers for recording conversations without consent, as well as privacy debates surrounding Apple’s continuous transcription features. Mo acknowledged that the responsibility for disclosing ambient capture currently rests on users, noting that the industry has not yet solved this disclosure problem.

According to the company, ambient data capture is disabled by default and can be turned off at any time. Ambi stated that it does not store audio recordings and employs encryption for user data, though specific encryption details were not provided. The company currently employs over 50 people across offices in San Francisco, Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, and is actively hiring for go-to-market and speech recognition engineering roles.

  1. Fascinating move. The proactive intervention during meetings could be a game-changer for productivity enthusiasts.

  2. Always-on listening? I’m not sure I’m comfortable with that level of surveillance, no matter the encryption promises.
