China Imposes Sanctions on Ministers from Paraguay and Belize Over Taiwan Ties

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday that it has imposed sanctions on the communications minister of Paraguay and the foreign minister of Belize. The measures were taken in response to the officials’ continued diplomatic relationships with Taiwan, which Beijing considers part of its territory.

The sanctions, which took effect immediately, include the freezing of assets held by Paraguay’s Gustavo Villate and Belize’s Francis Fonseca within Chinese borders. Additionally, both ministers have been denied visas for entry into Hong Kong and Macau, and Chinese organizations and individuals are prohibited from engaging in any transactions or cooperative activities with them.

In its statement, Beijing accused “anti-China politicians” driven by self-interest of pushing their respective nations to maintain relations with Taiwan. The ministry alleged that the two ministers had undertaken “egregious actions and statements” harmful to China’s core interests.

Paraguay and Belize are among the 12 countries that currently maintain formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan. The move comes shortly after Taiwan’s National Day celebrations, during which President William Lai Ching-te stated that the island cherishes peace but will not abandon its freedom. Lai’s remarks were condemned by China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, which accused him of distorting facts and misleading the public.

The targeted ministers had publicly celebrated Taiwan’s National Day. Villate posted on social media reaffirming Paraguay’s friendship with Taiwan based on shared democratic values, while Belize’s embassy in Taiwan celebrated the 37th anniversary of their diplomatic relations on Facebook. This follows a visit last month by Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung to Belize, where both sides agreed to deepen ties.

Taiwan retains formal diplomatic relationships with three other nations in the Americas: Guatemala, Haiti, and several Caribbean islands. While the United States does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, it is legally bound to provide the island with defensive capabilities. Earlier this month, Washington delivered two fighter jets to Taiwan as it seeks to bolster its deterrence against a potential Chinese attack.

  1. Small nations caught between giants always pays the price. Hope these ministers stay safe despite the visa bans.

  2. Freezing assets in China? Does that actually hurt ministers from Central/South America who likely don’t invest there?

  3. Sanctioning diplomats over diplomatic ties seems like a predictable, heavy-handed move by Beijing to assert control.
