Oil Prices Drop as Trump Announces Russia-Ukraine Energy Ceasefire

Global oil prices declined on Monday following an announcement by President Donald Trump that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an “energy ceasefire,” reducing immediate concerns over supply disruptions in Eastern Europe. Futures for Brent crude dropped 1.65% to $102.99 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures fell 1.92% to $90.09 per barrel.

In a social media statement, President Trump declared, “Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy echoed the sentiment, stating that Ukraine supports the ceasefire and urging Russia to uphold the agreement.

The price drop was further compounded by news that Russia plans to supply more than 4 million tons of diesel to global markets under a separate deal Trump struck with President Vladimir Putin during a recent phone call. This prospect of increased Russian energy flowing into international markets has contributed to the downward pressure on crude prices.

Despite these developments, volatility is expected to persist due to ongoing instability in the Middle East. Reports from Al Jazeera indicate that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi contacted his Saudi counterpart, Faisal bin Farhan, to offer assistance in facilitating dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi rebels. This diplomatic outreach comes in the wake of Houthi missile strikes on Riyadh’s airport last Saturday, which killed 12 people and injured over 300, significantly elevating regional risk premia.

Adding to the uncertainty, Hurricane Isaias has strengthened to Category 3 with 120 mph winds as it approaches the U.S. Gulf Coast, forcing energy producers to curtail offshore output. According to a Monday note from UOB, the storm’s impact could hinder domestic supplies, keeping upside pressure on prices even as geopolitical easing weighs on the broader market.

  1. Wait, so Russia is selling diesel while simultaneously signing a ceasefire? That’s an interesting combination of diplomacy and market leverage right there.

  2. I’m skeptical about this ‘energy ceasefire.’ Geopolitics are messy and Trump’s deals often shift quickly. Don’t celebrate lower prices just yet.

  3. Oil dropping is great news for drivers, but that Category 3 hurricane looming over the Gulf is a real wildcard. Hope supply holds up.
