Iran’s FM urges diplomacy in call with Saudi counterpart

Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, received a telephone call from his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, as reported by the Saudi state news agency. The discussion centered on recent escalations in the region, specifically the attacks on Saudi airports carried out by the Houthis, who are backed by Iran.

In a Sunday post on Telegram, Araghchi stressed that relying on military approaches while ignoring political solutions would only complicate an already volatile situation. He reiterated that the crises plaguing the region cannot be resolved through force, a stance consistent with his remarks last week regarding the conflict involving the United States, where he stated that only negotiations grounded in justice and fairness could bring an end to the war.

Araghchi also indicated that Iran is prepared to offer any necessary assistance to facilitate dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, aiming to help achieve a political settlement. This diplomatic outreach comes amid heightened tensions following a deadly attack on Riyadh airport last week, which resulted in 12 deaths and wounded 300 others.

Following the attack, US President Donald Trump announced that he is reconsidering America’s role in Yemen and weighing the resumption of strikes against Iran. This represents a shift from comments made on Thursday, when Trump stated that Washington would not resume strikes on Iran until after the US midterm elections.

Diplomatic relations between Tehran and Riyadh have persisted despite longstanding friction, with embassies restored under a Chinese-brokered agreement in 2023 remaining open. Prior to this breakthrough, a seven-year diplomatic rupture had fueled regional proxy conflicts. However, relations have deteriorated since the onset of the US-Israel war on Iran in late February.

Since the start of the conflict, Tehran and its aligned forces have targeted US military assets and energy infrastructure across the Gulf region, including oil fields in Saudi Arabia. In March 2026, Prince Faisal had warned Iran that tolerance for attacks on Saudi Arabia and neighboring Gulf states was limited, urging Tehran to “recalculate” its strategy.
