Polish authorities launched an emergency security consultation on Sunday to address a credible threat of assassination targeting Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz. The urgent meeting was organized at the Counter-Terrorism Center of the Internal Security Agency (ABW), according to Interior Ministry spokesperson Karolina Galecka, who confirmed the gathering followed police reports of a potential attack.
The security briefing occurs against a backdrop of heightened tension following a series of violent incidents at educational institutions across Poland earlier this week. While the specifics of the threat have not been publicly detailed, the government remains on high alert as the nation grapples with an unprecedented wave of school violence that has claimed at least one life and injured numerous others.
Over a four-day period, Poland experienced three separate knife attacks at schools. The violence began on Wednesday when a 19-year-old student assaulted classmates and teachers at a vocational school in the central Mazovian province, injuring nine individuals. The following day, a 15-year-old boy killed a school caretaker and wounded two others at his former school in Leszczydol-Nowiny; authorities noted the suspect had worn a helmet-mounted camera to record the incident. On Saturday, a 21-year-old woman attacked an adult education center in Warsaw, wounding three other women.
In response to the crisis, Polish police have detained 117 individuals nationwide for carrying weapons or issuing threats against schools. Authorities also conducted inspections at 64,000 schools, primarily in the Mazovian region. Cybercrime investigators subsequently determined that the attacks were not part of a coordinated social media challenge.
During a government crisis meeting on Sunday, Tusk characterized the assaults as “spontaneous actions” driven by an escalating online glorification of violence rather than organized political groups. He described the phenomenon as “nihilistic violence,” though he acknowledged that some detainees had connections to ultraright circles. Tusk highlighted a troubling rise in internet searches for Nazi imagery and content romanticizing mass killers, attributing part of the issue to children’s increasing exposure to violent video games and crime narratives.
He further noted that Poland, which shares a border with Ukraine, has faced intensifying hybrid security threats from Russia in recent months. School security checks are scheduled to continue throughout the coming week to prevent copycat attacks among students exposed to the recent violence.
Tusk calling it nihilistic violence is accurate, but we need serious mental health reform for youth, not just police raids. This won’t stop copycats.
Is there any official confirmation on the origin of the assassination threat? It feels like political opportunism given the current tensions with Russia.
I had no idea the school violence was this severe. Three attacks in four days is absolutely horrifying. The government needs to act faster.
This is terrifying. Assassination plots on top of school violence? Poland seems to be in a dangerous downward spiral right now.
