Cloudflare announced on Friday that it has acquired Deno, the startup behind the popular JavaScript and TypeScript runtime of the same name. The acquisition is intended to bolster Cloudflare’s Workers programming model, a platform that enables developers to build and execute software across the company’s global network.
Kenton Varda, Cloudflare’s principal engineer for Workers, stated that the integration of Deno will help refine the technical capabilities of the platform. Prior to the acquisition, Deno had recently introduced
Back in the day we had just one runtime. Now we have Deno, Bun, and Node all fighting.
Finally! This solves the runtime fragmentation issue on the edge. A smart strategic play.
Deno is great, but I wonder if this acquisition will slow down its rapid innovation pace?
Will Deno code still run on Workers? I hope compatibility stays strong for existing users.
Interesting move by Cloudflare. Ryan Dahl leaving Node.js to join them makes sense now.
