On Friday, a federal judge invalidated the Justice Department’s nationwide initiative to gather voter registration data in an effort to pinpoint suspected non-citizens. The ruling prevents the Trump administration from continuing the program, even in states that had agreed to cooperate voluntarily.

U.S. District Judge Sparkle Sooknanan, presiding in Washington, D.C., determined that the department had overstepped its legal boundaries and breached federal privacy statutes in its pursuit of the eligibility database.
