Climate change is increasingly threatening some of the planet’s most renowned surf destinations, with rising sea levels submerging key breaks and coastal development crushing classic waves against hardened shorelines, according to recent research.
An analysis of numerous famous waves located within World Surfing Reserves (WSR) revealed that more than 75% are at high risk. The study identified changing tide levels, shifting sands, and fortified coastlines as the primary drivers of this decline, impacts that extend well beyond the surfing community.
The findings highlight how environmental shifts are altering the physical geography of iconic coastline areas, putting both recreation and local ecosystems in jeopardy.
