US President Donald Trump announced on Friday the creation of a committee to investigate Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, alleging she committed mortgage fraud. This move intensifies his campaign to remove her from office, despite a June Supreme Court decision that ruled her earlier dismissal unconstitutional.
According to the White House, the new panel will collaborate with justice department officials to determine if there is sufficient ’cause’ for her removal. The administration plans to hold a closed in-person hearing on November 5 to review the allegations. Although the proceedings will not be open to the public, they will be transcribed and made available for publication.
Cook will have the opportunity to submit a written statement to present her own evidence. She will also face questioning from legal representatives for both the White House and herself during the process.
