Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has fiercely rejected allegations of bias against driver George Russell, labeling critics who make such claims as “brainless.” The comments come as the Formula 1 season approaches the Singapore Grand Prix, with Russell’s championship ambitions significantly damaged by an engine failure during the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Russell, who was running third when his car suffered a mechanical breakage, now trails teammate Kimi Antonelli by 86 points in the drivers’ standings. Compounding his troubles, the British driver faces a grid penalty for exceeding his engine component allocation, forcing him to start from the rear of the field.
Wolff described the suggestions that Mercedes favors Antonelli over Russell as “completely nonsensical,” drawing parallels to previous backlash the team faced regarding Lewis Hamilton. “I mean, literally, I don’t know what’s going on,” Wolff said. “Do they think I have a button that says, ‘George engine failure now,’ or disadvantaging one driver against the other when we are fighting for a Constructors’ Championship, when we have always had the mindset of providing everybody equal material?”
The German executive expressed frustration with the current climate of social media polarization, noting that anonymous users often lash out from behind their screens. “There’s a lot of polarisation going on, and sometimes I read what people write. I find it hilarious,” Wolff admitted. “These people really contribute to my own entertainment when they are abusing the team or myself. I’m Satan, I’ve heard.”
Emphasizing his commitment to equality since taking leadership of Mercedes in 2013, Wolff highlighted his close personal relationships with both drivers. He noted that he has known Antonelli since the Finn was 11 years old, while Russell has been with the team since he was 17. Wolff also revealed a strong off-track bond between the two families, stating that he and his wife Susie frequently socialize with Russell and his fiancée, Carmen Montero Mundt.
“We are spending time with Carmen and Susie off the track with each other,” Wolff explained. “If people would see that we’re travelling together, we’re having coffee in the same coffee shop, we’re going to the gym. That’s why it’s pretty annoying to have some lunatics that have no understanding really about how relationships work coming up with these kinds of accusations.”
Addressing technical matters for the upcoming race at Marina Bay, Wolff confirmed that Mercedes will run different car specifications for each driver after an upgrade introduced in Malaysia failed to yield the expected performance gains. Russell will utilize the previous specification, while Antonelli will pilot the new version.
“We don’t know which one is going to be quicker,” Wolff said, adding that initial feedback suggested the new car was slightly more difficult to drive, though not necessarily slower. He stressed that the outcome of this upgrade strategy could have significant implications for Mercedes’ development path toward the 2027 season.
