Nobel Peace Prize 2026 Awarded to ICC Judge Navanethem ‘Navi’ Pillay

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, an 85-year-old South African judge on the International Criminal Court (ICC) and a prominent human rights defender. The announcement was made on Friday by Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, who cited Pillay’s extensive efforts to advance peace and uphold international law.

Frydnes revealed that committee members had been unable to reach Pillay directly to deliver the news. Addressing the laureate from the podium, he urged her to answer if she saw an incoming call from a Norwegian phone number, should she be watching the ceremony.

Pillay previously served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Her appointment marks a significant recognition for legal scholars and jurists, joining a list of laureates that has honored 112 individuals and 28 institutions since the prize’s inception in 1901.

This year commemorates the 125th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize. The committee received 287 nominations, with slightly more than a quarter coming from organizations. The monetary award remains at 12 million Swedish kronor, approximately $1.2 million.

Pillay’s selection follows last year’s award to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, recognized for her role in the democratic struggle against Nicolás Maduro. Machado recently presented her medal to President Donald Trump following the U.S.-led ouster of the Venezuelan president, though the Nobel Committee maintains that the honor itself cannot be transferred.

The peace prize announcement comes days after the other major Nobel awards were revealed. Canadian writer Anne Carson took the literature prize, while scientists in medicine, physics, and chemistry were honored for breakthroughs in brain research, neutrino study, and molecular chemistry. The Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences is scheduled for announcement on Monday.

Historically, the peace prize has been awarded to just 20 women out of 112 individual recipients, though eight of those women have won in the past 15 years. Education activist Malala Yousafzai remains the youngest laureate, having won at age 17 in 2014. The United States leads in total awards with 24, followed by the United Kingdom and Switzerland.

  1. Why is the Norwegian committee still ignoring the ICC’s controversial rulings on powerful nations?

  2. Finally, a well-deserved recognition for international law. Navi Pillay has dedicated her life to justice.
