ICE Agent Shoots Man in Bronx, sparking Protests and Political Fallout

A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer discharged his weapon during a targeted arrest operation in the Bronx on Thursday, leaving a man hospitalized. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that the officer acted as part of a mission to apprehend an individual described as a “criminal illegal alien.” Officials stated that the suspect survived the incident and was transported to a local hospital.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani characterized the event as an “unconscionable and incredibly serious situation.” Citing early reports, the mayor alleged that agents surrounded the man and a five-year-old child inside a vehicle before opening fire. He indicated that authorities believe the child was not physically injured. The BBC has reached out to the DHS for comment regarding these specific claims.

By Thursday evening, Governor Kathy Hochul announced she had contacted President Donald Trump to express her outrage on behalf of New York residents. Hochul also requested that any body-camera footage from the shooting be made public to ensure transparency and establish the facts. As of the report, President Trump had not issued a public statement regarding the incident.

The DHS identified the man as originating from the Dominican Republic, though officials declined to release his name. According to the agency, the individual had a prior criminal conviction for grand larceny and multiple previous arrests for assault, robbery, drug possession, and weapons violations. The DHS further claimed the man was affiliated with the Trinitarios, a transnational criminal organization cited by the US Department of Justice.

In response to the shooting, Mayor Mamdani took to social media platform X to announce his intention to ask President Trump to halt ICE enforcement actions within the city. “I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorise our communities,” he wrote. The incident drew a crowd of demonstrators to the scene, who chanted slogans demanding justice and calling for ICE to leave the streets.

FBI officers were observed searching a vehicle at the scene late on Thursday night. The shooting adds to a series of high-profile incidents involving federal immigration agents and has intensified political tensions surrounding immigration enforcement in New York City.

4 responses to “ICE Agent Shoots Man in Bronx, sparking Protests and Political Fallout”

  1. As a Bronx resident, I’m furious. Community safety cannot come at the cost of terrorizing families.

  2. The mayor calling it unconscionable is strong, but the prior convictions list is serious. This isn’t black and white.

  3. Is a five-year-old really in a car during an ICE raid? That sounds terrifying and completely unnecessary.

  4. Hope the body cam footage drops soon. We need to see exactly what happened before judging either side.
