Israeli attacks have resulted in a Palestinian being killed or wounded every 90 minutes on average since the cessation of hostilities was announced last October, according to a new report by the UK-based charity Islamic Relief.
The aid organization stated on Thursday that at least 1,454 Palestinians have been killed and more than 5,000 injured over the past year. Among the deceased, at least 320 were children, equating to nearly one child per day.
These figures align closely with data from Gaza’s Health Ministry, which reported 1,471 deaths and 5,189 injuries since the ceasefire took effect. The ministry also noted four additional fatalities and 28 injuries within the last 24 hours alone. Since the conflict began in October 2023, the total death toll has reached at least 74,254.
Recent incidents include the killing of a Palestinian southeast of Deir el-Balah in central Gaza by Israeli forces, and an airstrike on a residence in central Khan Younis that wounded several individuals, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa. In the occupied West Bank, a 13-year-old boy was shot in the foot during an Israeli raid in Yamoun, west of Jenin, as reported by the Palestinian Red Crescent.
Islamic Relief highlighted that Israel’s use of the so-called Yellow Line, which demarcates areas under military control, has effectively displaced Palestinians from 65 percent of Gaza. This has compressed the territory’s population of nearly 2.1 million people into the remaining 35 percent.
A charity aid worker operating in Gaza, whose identity was withheld for safety reasons, told the group: “There is no ceasefire in reality. They target displacement camps and crowded areas, so there is still a lot of fear.”
The report further alleged that Israel continues to restrict the entry of essential materials, including shelter supplies, fuel, and medical equipment. Consequently, approximately 82 percent of Gaza’s structures have been damaged or destroyed, more than half of health services have ceased operations, and over 20,000 critically ill patients are being denied permission to leave for medical treatment.
Islamic Relief called on global leaders to intensify pressure to protect civilians and adhere to international law. “A ceasefire in name only cannot be an excuse for international inaction,” the charity said.
Eighty-two percent of structures destroyed… the sheer scale of this devastation is difficult to comprehend for anyone outside the region.
I’m struggling to see how this continues without explicit international intervention. The Yellow Line displacement is effectively ethnic cleansing on paper.
The statistics from Islamic Relief align closely with Gaza Health Ministry data, which lends them significant credibility despite recent misinformation trends.
A ‘ceasefire in name only’ defeats the entire purpose of the agreement. How can humanitarian aid even function under these conditions?
This is utterly heartbreaking. One child killed every single day since the ceasefire? We cannot turn away.
