Ethiopia Claims Drone Strikes on Eritrean Troops in Tigray

Ethiopian military officials announced that drone strikes targeted Eritrean forces operating within the Tigray region. The attack marks a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions between the two East African nations, which had recently moved to normalize diplomatic relations.

According to the Ethiopian defense ministry, the operation was carried out in response to intelligence indicating that Eritrean troops were actively supporting rebel groups fighting against the central government. The strikes were directed at military positions believed to be occupied by Eritrean soldiers who have allegedly been providing logistical and combat support to the insurgents.

This incident underscores the fragility of the recent rapprochement between Addis Ababa and Asmara. Despite high-level talks aimed at restoring ties and resolving outstanding border disputes, allegations of cross-border interference continue to surface. The Ethiopian government has accused Eritrea of undermining regional stability by arming and training rebel factions in Tigray.

Meanwhile, Eritrea has not yet issued an official statement regarding the reported drone strikes. However, the accusation highlights the deep-seated mistrust and strategic competition that persists in the Horn of Africa, threatening to derail broader peace efforts in the region.
