A bus carrying at least 40 people fell down a steep ravine on the Cape Verde island of Santiago, killing at least 25 people, according to official reports.
The accident occurred on the evening of August 12 on Route Nacional 2, roughly 3 kilometers outside of the island’s capital, Praia. The vehicle reportedly veered off the road before plunging into the ravine.
Local governor Jose Maria Neves described the scene as “very serious,” confirming 25 fatalities and noting that 15 survivors have been rescued, though three are in critical condition.
Rescue operations involved local firefighters, civil protection agencies, and the Portuguese Air Force, which provided a plane to assist. Authorities have launched an investigation into the causes of the crash.
