While the PS5 console itself is built to last through a full generation, the wireless controller often requires replacement sooner due to battery degradation and hardware wear.
Battery longevity is a primary concern, with the standard DualSense typically lasting between six and 12 hours on a single charge. This relatively short lifespan is driven by power-intensive features such as the adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, built-in speaker, and light bar. Titles that heavily utilize these mechanics, such as Astro Bot and Returnal, can deplete the 1,560mAh lithium-ion battery in approximately six hours. For extended sessions in graphically demanding titles like GTA VI, owning a spare controller or keeping a charging cable nearby is recommended.
The premium DualSense Edge controller, priced at $200, actually offers less battery capacity than its standard counterpart. Due to its 1,050mAh battery, which is smaller to accommodate rear paddles and modular components, it lasts between five and 10 hours. Despite its higher price point, it does not provide an extended lifespan compared to the standard model.
Beyond battery issues, stick drift remains a common failure point. This defect occurs when analog sticks register input without user interaction, a problem caused by natural wear and tear or moisture ingress. While cleaning the inputs with compressed air or rubbing alcohol and keeping firmware updated can help mitigate software-related issues, there is no guaranteed fix for hardware drift. Heavy players may experience this defect much sooner than casual users.
Sony provides a one-year warranty that covers free repairs or replacements for defective controllers, including stick drift. However, once this period expires, owners must pay for third-party repair services, which often makes purchasing a new controller a more cost-effective solution.
In comparisons with competitors, the Xbox Wireless Controller holds a significant advantage in battery life. Because it uses replaceable AA batteries, it can operate for 30 to 40 hours, far exceeding the DualSense. Even official rechargeable battery packs for Xbox controllers offer around 25 to 30 hours of playtime, highlighting the stamina gap between the two gaming ecosystems.
