Amazon has unveiled its inaugural smart lock, designed to solve a common dilemma for homeowners: what to do when the rechargeable battery dies while they are away from home. Unlike competing devices that rely on hidden USB ports or external 9-volt batteries to jumpstart a dead lock, this new Ring Smart Lock integrates a mechanical charger directly into the thumb-turn dial.
According to the company, rotating the dial a few times generates sufficient electricity to unlock the door, allowing entry and enabling a full recharge once inside. Amazon has not disclosed the exact number of rotations required, but emphasized the convenience of having an internal power source rather than needing a physical backup key or external power bank.
The Ring Smart Lock is anticipated to launch in the United States later this year, marking a significant shift in how consumers approach home security and battery maintenance.
I’m skeptical about how many rotations actually unlock it. Spinning that dial fifty times feels like a workout, not convenience.
Finally, a smart lock that doesn’t leave me stranded. No more digging for backup keys or hoping I remember to charge it.
