Boots Acquired by Canadian Weston Family in $8.9bn Deal

Boots, the prominent UK high-street pharmacy and retail chain, has agreed to be purchased by the holding company of Canada’s billionaire Weston family. The transaction, valued at approximately $8.9bn (£6.7bn), was confirmed on Wednesday by Wittington Investments, which is acquiring the retailer from US private equity firm Sycamore Partners.

Sycamore Partners had only held ownership of the retailer for 18 months prior to this sale. The agreement encompasses Boots’ retail operations across the United Kingdom and Ireland, its optician services, the No7 Beauty Company brand, as well as its business interests in Thailand and various franchised locations.

Galen Weston, who serves as the chairman of Wittington, is set to take over as chairman of Boots upon the deal’s conclusion. In a statement regarding the acquisition, he emphasized the retailer’s significance, stating that it plays a “vital role in everyday life across the UK and Ireland.” He further added that the investors view “a meaningful opportunity to make a great business even better through stable long-term ownership.”

The completion of the deal is projected to take place in the early part of 2027.

  1. Wait, are we sure Canada’s Weston family is the right fit for a British high-street staple like Boots? Interesting choice.

  2. Will this affect prices? I hope No7 stays accessible because my wallet definitely doesn’t need more pressure right now.

  3. Great news for stability. Boots needs owners who actually care about the long term, not just quick flips.

  4. So Sycamore only held it for eighteen months? That feels like a short turnaround for such a massive deal.
