Displaced Nir Oz Residents Seek Return to Site of October 7 Massacre

Marking the third anniversary of the October 7 Hamas assaults, displaced families from the kibbutz Nir Oz are voicing their determination to return to the site where they suffered some of the conflict’s most devastating losses.

Nir Oz, located merely a mile (1.6km) from the Gaza border, was among the hardest-hit communities during the initial attack. The violence resulted in the deaths of 41 residents and foreign workers, alongside six individuals who had sought refuge at the kibbutz from a nearby party. In total, 76 people were taken hostage to Gaza; nine of these individuals were recovered as bodies, while 14 others who were taken alive subsequently died while in captivity.

The broader October 7 operations led to approximately 1,200 fatalities and saw 251 people abducted. The subsequent war between Israel and Hamas has resulted in more than 74,200 deaths in Gaza, according to figures from the Hamas-run health ministry, which the United Nations considers accurate.

For the former residents now living in temporary accommodation, the decision to rebuild is driven by a need to restore their lives and ensure the community continues to exist despite the trauma.
