Eva Marie Saint, Oscar-Winning Star of ‘On the Waterfront,’ Dies at 102

Eva Marie Saint, the celebrated actress who won an Academy Award for her film debut in the classic crime drama ‘On the Waterfront,’ has died. She was 102 years old.

According to family representative Jeff Sanderson, Saint passed away on Tuesday from natural causes at her home in Los Angeles, surrounded by loved ones.

Saint first made her mark in 1954 under the direction of Elia Kazan. Portraying Edie Doyle, the romantic interest of Marlon Brando’s conflicted dockworker character, she secured the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Her performance alongside the intense method actor left a lasting impression; she later recalled finding Brando both “adorable” and slightly intimidating, noting that he seemed to see right through her.

Five years after her debut, Saint became one of Alfred Hitchcock’s famous blonde heroines, starring as Eve Kendall in the thriller ‘North by Northwest.’ The role required her to seduce Cary Grant’s character, a feat supported by Grant’s meticulous attention to detail. Saint explained that Grant focused on building the character from the outside in, carefully styling her hair, makeup, and wardrobe to help her embody the spy persona.

Her career spanned decades and mediums. In 1990, she won an Emmy Award for her portrayal of a wealthy widow in the television miniseries ‘People Like Us.’ Although she stepped away from the spotlight for many years to raise a family with her husband, director Jeffrey Hayden, she returned to cinema in her early 80s. She played Superman’s adoptive mother in the 2006 blockbuster ‘Superman Returns’ and appeared in films such as ‘Winter’s Tale’ and ‘Mariette in Ecstasy.’

Born in Newark, New Jersey, Saint originally planned to become a teacher before discovering a passion for the theatre. She trained in New York at the Herbert Berghof Studio and the Actors Studio, which was co-founded by Kazan. Throughout her life, she credited her longevity to the emotional depth gained from lived experience.

Saint holds two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Her marriage to Hayden lasted 65 years until his death in 2016. She is survived by their two children.
