Two individuals lost their lives in Kyiv on Wednesday after a missile strike ignited a fire in the Darnytskyi district, according to city mayor Vitali Klitschko. The attack comes amid an escalation in Russian aerial bombardments as winter approaches, prompting residents to seek shelter in subway stations.
Klitschko reported on Telegram that two people were rescued from the blaze, but the bodies of two others were recovered from the rubble. The incident follows a warning issued by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding “updated intelligence information” indicating that Russia was preparing a large-scale strike against the capital.
In anticipation of the attack, scheduled power outages were implemented across parts of Kyiv to reduce strain on the energy grid. The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed that a ballistic missile was on a trajectory toward the city, while military monitoring channels predicted a coordinated assault involving cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and jet-powered drones.
Local residents described a climate of heightened anxiety. Iryna Rybalchenko, a bank employee who sought refuge in the metro, told AFP that the entire city was gripped by fear. “We were stuck at work today and everyone… were messaging us to be careful,” she said.
Beyond the capital, violence continued elsewhere in the country. In Sumy Oblast, a Russian drone attack resulted in two deaths and injured multiple civilians, including three children aged seven, 14, and 16, who were hurt when an apartment building was struck. Additionally, a ballistic missile threat directed at Zaporizhzhia in the southeast caused damage to transport infrastructure.
Kyiv has seen intensified attacks in recent weeks, with Russian forces targeting energy systems and key transportation links such as bridges crossing the Dnipro river. Last week, Klitschko stated that the capital was effectively on a war footing due to the relentless nature of the strikes.
