HRW Warns of Global Detention Crisis as ISIS Suspects Face ‘Outsourced’ Justice in Iraq

In a recent discussion with Erin Ogunkeye, Letta Tayler, Senior Counterterrorism Advisor at Human Rights Watch, raised alarms regarding the treatment of suspected Islamic State members being held in Iraq. Tayler characterized the situation as part of a wider “global detention crisis,” highlighting the transfer of detainees from northeast Syria to Iraqi custody.

The advisor described the living conditions for these men and boys as “dire,” noting reports of deaths caused by illness and serious allegations of torture. Furthermore, significant concerns have been raised about the detainees’ ability to access effective legal representation.

The conversation centered on whether accountability can be achieved through legal proceedings that uphold the rule of law and deliver genuine justice for both the accused and their victims.
