Macron Condemns Russia’s ‘Irresponsible’ Attacks on Ukrainian Civilian Targets

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned Russia’s intensified strikes on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure on Monday, describing the actions as “irresponsible.” The statement followed a discussion between Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky focused on strengthening support for Kyiv.

Speaking on X, Macron stated that he and Zelensky reviewed “concrete support” aimed at helping Ukraine intercept drones and defend against Russian attacks. “We will yield neither to intimidation nor to Russia’s escalation,” Macron said, accusing Moscow of stubbornly refusing all ceasefire proposals.

The condemnation comes as Russia announced over the weekend that it would increase strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure ahead of winter. Kyiv has repeatedly called on Western allies for enhanced air-defense weaponry to counter the growing threat of drone and missile barrages. Ukraine has also expressed interest in locally producing Patriot missile systems under a US license, though the status of such an agreement remains uncertain.

Tensions escalated further over the weekend when Russia issued a fresh warning for foreigners and diplomats to depart Kyiv, citing planned “massive” airstrikes. Despite the warning, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz traveled to Kyiv on Sunday to demonstrate solidarity and pledge additional financial aid to Ukraine.

In a separate incident, Russian drones struck a Turkish grain ship in the Black Sea, resulting in two deaths. Zelensky described the attack as a “horrific strike” on a civilian vessel carrying corn in neutral waters, noting that Azerbaijani and Indian nationals were aboard. Romanian authorities confirmed that the 139-meter vessel, the Royad Mammadov, caught fire approximately 30 nautical miles south of the port of Sfantu Gheorghe. Eleven crew members were rescued, while two, including the captain, were killed.

France 24 reported that drone activity has become increasingly frequent across Eastern Europe as both Ukraine and NATO member Romania rely more heavily on aerial warfare. Turkey has raised concerns over the attacks on Black Sea shipping, with Turkish seafarers staging protests regarding the deaths of their colleagues.

2 responses to “Macron Condemns Russia’s ‘Irresponsible’ Attacks on Ukrainian Civilian Targets”

  1. Macron’s words sound strong, but Kyiv needs actual Patriot batteries, not just promises. When will Europe put its money where its mouth is?

  2. The attacks on the grain ship are absolutely horrifying. Two dead in neutral waters? This has to escalate NATO’s response immediately.
