Relatives of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro secured significant victories in Sunday’s general election, marking a substantial political shift for the right-wing bloc. Among the notable winners was Flavio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of the imprisoned ex-leader, who managed to exceed President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s performance in the first round of the presidential race.
The electoral success comes despite Jair Bolsonaro currently being held in jail. Throughout the campaign period, Flavio Bolsonaro had made amnesty for his father a central promise, a pledge that appears to have resonated strongly with voters and contributed to the family’s broad gains across multiple polls.
Brazil is polarized beyond repair. This result shows deep divisions that no one saw coming.
Is this legal? His dad is in jail campaigning through his son? Seems like a conflict of interest to me.
Amnesty for his father really played well here. The Bolsonaro family loyalty is clearly still strong.
This is a huge shocker. I never thought Flavio could overtake Lula in the first round.
