Jovic Tears Up After Epic Win Over Friend Eala at US Open

Iva Jovic was moved to tears following her hard-fought three-set victory over fellow rising star Alex Eala, a win that secured her spot in the US Open quarterfinals. The 14th-seeded American defeated the 17th-seeded Filipino player 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in a grueling three-hour and three-minute contest on Saturday.

Jovic will now face fourth-seeded Coco Gauff in the next round. Reflecting on the marathon match, Jovic said, “That felt like a marathon, and I felt like I lost my sanity five times over to win that match. But it’s really worth it for this feeling.”

The two young players made their Arthur Ashe Stadium debuts memorable with a high-intensity battle featuring 17 service breaks across 33 games. Jovic noted that the dramatic finish justified the prestige of the stadium.

Emotions ran high after the final point. Instead of waiting at the net, Eala walked around the court to embrace her opponent. When asked about this gesture during the post-match press conference, Jovic became emotional.

“It says a lot about her as a person,” Jovic said, wiping away tears. “She’s incredible.”

Jovic, 18, and Eala, 21, are close friends and occasional doubles partners, which contributed to the electric atmosphere and seven service breaks in the first 11 games. Jovic described the physical toll of the match, mentioning lost earrings, falls, and cuts, alongside significant mental challenges.

Eala acknowledged the difficulty of the loss but expressed pride in her performance. “I left everything out there. I fought through the ups and downs… What I know for a fact is that I fought, so I’m happy with that,” she said.

Jovic, a quarterfinalist at this year’s Australian Open and last year’s WTA champion in Guadalajara, noted Eala’s improved versatility and serving. She praised her opponent’s current form, stating, “She’s playing some of the best tennis in the world right now. No doubt it takes a hell of an effort to beat her.”
